Aspect Ratios Explained: 1:1, 4:3, 16:9, and More

PicsReduce Team

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height. A 16:9 image is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. Matching aspect ratio to your platform prevents awkward auto-cropping.

Common Aspect Ratios

RatioDecimalCommon uses
1:11.00Instagram square, profile photos, product thumbnails
4:50.80Instagram portrait feed
4:31.33Traditional photography, presentations
3:21.50DSLR camera default, print (4×6 inch)
16:91.78YouTube, TV, widescreen web heroes
9:160.56Stories, Reels, TikTok vertical video
35:450.78Passport and ID photos

How to Calculate Pixel Dimensions

Multiply one dimension by the ratio to get the other:

  • 16:9 at 1920 px wide: 1920 ÷ 16 × 9 = 1080 px tall → 1920 × 1080
  • 1:1 at 1080 px wide: 1080 × 1 = 1080 px tall → 1080 × 1080
  • 4:5 at 1080 px wide: 1080 ÷ 4 × 5 = 1350 px tall → 1080 × 1350

Why Aspect Ratio Matters for SEO and UX

Images that match their display container avoid:

  • Letterboxing (empty bars above/below)
  • Platform auto-crop cutting important content
  • Layout shift when images load at wrong proportions
  • Wasted bandwidth serving oversized wrong-ratio images
